Thermostat connection diagrams for gas boilers. Which thermostat can be used??
Manual and automatic adjustment of the room temperature from modern heating sources is done with thermostats or thermostats.
They can be mechanical or electronic. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages.
All of them are similar in appearance, but the circuitry is different.
Let’s take a closer look at the peculiarities of connecting a thermostat to the gas boiler, its scheme, errors and possible problems in the operation of such devices.
To choose the right thermostat model, turn it over and carefully study the back side. Namely. Diagram, labels and pins.
If it says “Dry Contact” you have made the right choice. This is the designation of the thermostats designed to work with gas boilers.
The term “dry contact” says that in any state there is no voltage on these terminals. That is the 220V supply to L and N pads of the thermostat will not be connected with the dry contacts and the voltage will never get there.
Unlike underfloor heating thermostats, as in the diagram below. They have supply contacts (3-4) and the load (1-2) are connected directly with each other.
Why do you need this thing for a gas boiler?? Without such a programmer, the boiler after reaching the set temperature will run with a delay of about 3 minutes.

Thus, for the entire heating season the gas boiler will be turned on and off 40,000 times. By connecting a thermostat, you are several times reducing these commutations, thereby achieving not only gas savings, but also reducing the wear and tear of the heating equipment.
The logic of operation here is as follows. In the factory settings, the boiler heats water at the temperature of the coolant.
By installing the remote thermostat, we give it the command to heat water not as the boiler would like, but according to the settings of the thermostat, ie.е. for a particular temperature in a particular room.
With the normal insulation of the house and minimal heat loss, the gas boiler with a thermoregulator will run for only 3-4 hours a day.
If the thermostat after installation has had no effect on the operating time of the boiler, it is likely that the gas appliance is set at a lower temperature than necessary. The sensor simply does not have time to warm up to the necessary value and work, while t of the coolant has already reached the threshold.
In the instructions separately prescribe the minimum t on the boiler when using an external thermostat. As a rule, it should not be less than 65 degrees.
Initially at the heater is recommended to set the design temperature, which fully covers the heat loss of the building. When these heat losses are not known, for a standard heating system take values from 60 to 70C.
If you live in a relatively warm climate and do not raise the temperature of the radiators above 45C in winter, you will still need to increase the temperature to operate the thermostat.

To connect the thermostat from the boiler terminal block to the Dry Contact terminals, you need to bring the two wires.

Sometimes, however, manufacturers place them outside of the board.
Still some installers connect the cable here during the installation and take it out so the consumer will not get to the board and mess up something there. Since the thermostat is not yet installed, the cable ends are shorted.
By the way, be careful with this outrigger. Some consumers have encountered the problem of the factory intertwined wires, such as at Protherm.
In the end, everything starts to work as it should, but only when you connect it the other way round.
Initially, there is a jumper between the terminals. If the jumper is broken, the gas boiler simply stops working.
When connecting the thermostat, the factory-made jumper is removed and in its place is a cable laid to the installation location of the thermostat. Most importantly, no internal settings on the boiler need to be changed.
A low voltage control pulse (usually 24V) is sent through these terminals.
We have a control device (thermostat) and a slave (boiler). Between them, a set of constantly transmitting requests and responses via a low current line.
The principle of operation here is simple. by closing the dry contact, we thereby allow the boiler to work, by opening the contact, we interrupt the data transfer and prohibit. Closing and opening occurs through the thermostat relay, depending on the temperature setting on the device and comparing the current values in the room.
In case of tripping, first the burner is switched off, after a certain period of time (pump run-down time) the circulating pump is also switched off. Although in different models the algorithm of work of the pump can be different.
It is not desirable for the pump to turn off immediately after the thermostat is activated. In this case, set an offset of 5 to 10 minutes in the menu. Then the whole heating system will cool down evenly and the intervals of operation of automatics will increase.
On expensive models that support the OpenTherm protocol, you can control many boiler parameters via the remote programmer, not only switching on and off.

Just do not forget that almost all mechanical models have a very large hysteresis. They can not create a comfortable temperature in the room.

Some models have contacts marked NO (normally open), NC (normally closed) and COM (general). Someone advises to connect through them, namely through NC and COM.
