How to Use Microsoft RDP Client for Mac with Alternatives

Basic Requirements
First, make sure the network connectivity is working properly from macOS to Windows OS. You can confirm this by using the ‘ping’ tool (command). The firewall on both computers should allow ping and RDP protocols
Obviously, you must know the IP address or the Windows 10 computer name to take the remote desktop from macOS. To make it work with the computer name, your network environment should have a local DNS server.

4) Click on New and configure the valid client PC IP (or PC name) and credentials that have RDP access on a particular Windows computer.
PC Name – It could be the IP address of the Windows 10/8.1 PC you are trying to take the remote desktop connection. If you have the DNS server internally that can convert the PC (Computer) name to IP address, then you can enter the correct PC name here.
User Name and Password – This account should have valid access to the remote computer. A standard Windows user must be added to the ‘Remote Desktop Users’ group to have remote desktop access on a Windows PC. The local and domain administrators are already part of this group.
5) On the slow network connection, you can reduce the resolution and colors to work RDP smoothly. Though the graphical experience will be limited, you will not get lagging issues.
Colors: You can change the quality of colors of the RDP connection. Reducing the colors to 8 bit will allow having smoother RDP connection (but with less color quality) on a slow network. If you are trying remote desktop through a slow internet or WAN connection, these settings potentially help to fine-tune the connection.

I’ve been using RDC with Win 8.1 and OS X. It does not work as of Now with OS X RDC client and Windows 10. Talk about a massive waste of time. When will I learn that MS doesn’t have there crap together until about a year later of a major OS release.
Also desperate for it to work on Windows 10 – tried everything! :'( Have to go to get my laptop restored! Need RDP for work.

RDP from macOS to Windows (Example)
RDP connection can be made to Windows machine from computers running other operating systems by using the native RDP client software.
Big Sur 11 macOS and Monterey 12 macOS
In this example we will be using Parallels Client for macOS that can be downloaded from Mac App Store: Parallels Client, however there are other clients you can configure and use.
Note: Due to changes introduced in macOS 11 and macOS 12 the functionality described in this article is currently not supported on M1 Processor with Big Sur and Monterey.
Step 1
Download and install Parallels Client from Mac App Store. Installing this client will register it for opening the rdp links.
Note: Link above points to Mac App Store. US version, depending on which Mac App Store you are using you might need to search for “RDP” in the search bar instead of following the link.
Step 2
Log into ISL Light and open the “Settings”.
Step 3
In the Port Forward section change the Default rdp schema to the following:
/usr/bin/open.W.n “tuxclient:///?Command=LaunchAppConnType=4Server=localhostPort=Connect=YESSave=NO”
and hit “Enter”.
Step 4
Click on the “Action” button next to the computer you want to connect to and select the “Connect via. ” option then “rdp://localhost:3389”.
Step 5
Enter the access password for the remote computer then click “Connect”.
Note: Access password you enter here is the ISL AlwaysOn access password and not yet the user account password used for creating an RDP session.
Step 6
Enter the user account information for the remote computer and click “Done”.
Step 7
You can now control the remote Windows computer using RDP session from your macOS Big Sur 11 device.
Other MacOS Computers
In this example we will be using the official Microsoft RDP client for macOS that can be downloaded from Mac App Store: Microsoft Remote Desktop 10, however there are other clients you can configure and use.

Download and install Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 from Mac App Store. Installing this client will register it for opening the rdp links.

On the local Mac:
- Finder Go Utilities Terminal
- Type the remote login command into Terminal. This is the command that you have copied from the other Mac’s Sharing settings pane. This must give you login access to the remote Mac.
Apple Remote Desktop on macOS

- Go to Apple Menu System Preferences Sharing
- Select Remote Management
