Installing an extractor hood in the kitchen: can we do without it
It is not always possible to install an extractor hood in the kitchen. There are cases when its installation is prohibited by the rules for the operation of gas appliances. For example, if the room is equipped with a gas water heater, the so-called gas water heater, or a gas boiler for heating with an open combustion chamber, it is contraindicated to install a circulating hood.

So before you make a kitchen hood, you need to figure out if you can do without a duct. If it is still needed, then you must determine the type of device. Exhaust hoods can be flow-through or circulating. Devices of the flowing type exhaust the exhaust air from the kitchen, and the circulating ones simply clean the air without its elimination.
Circulation devices are installed above the stove, the air passes through special charcoal filters, there is also cleared of grease. No ducting is needed for these constructions, they are compact and easy to install. The main disadvantages of ductless hoods are the need for frequent filter replacement, incomplete air purification, and lack of moisture and carbon dioxide removal.
Ducting for a kitchen hood
One of the stages of the hood installation is the selection and installation of air ducts. The air is extracted from the kitchen at room temperature, so there are no special requirements to the ducts and you can use any duct. Usually three types are used:
- Aluminium corrugated hose. It is good that it is easy to give the desired shape. it easily bends at any angle. Simply take a piece of the desired length and give it the desired shape. Disadvantage: the operation of the hood will be noisy, as the air flow causes noise and resonance. The second negative point. the surface is ribbed, which creates additional difficulties for air flow. Well, one more disadvantage. it is hard to maintain: soot and dust get stuck in the grooves, it is hard to clean.
- Plastic (PVC) round ducting. Convenient in operation round polymeric pipes. The duct of the desired configuration is collected from the shaped elements. roundings, bends, adapters, couplings. They are connected to the pipe due to the presence of expansions on the shaped elements. The cross-section of the ducting is determined by the size of the outlet on the hood. In the case of rectangular ducts use an adapter.
Duct sizes for hoods
Round ducts are available in three sizes: 100 mm, 125 mm and 150 mm. This is the diameter of plastic pipes and corrugated hoses. There are more cross-sections of flat ducts and they are shown in the table.

How to choose the size? In the case of round pipes, their diameter must match the diameter of the exhaust outlet. It is very undesirable to put an adapter at the outlet and then use a smaller diameter duct. this will reduce the rate of air purification. And even if the hood is very powerful, it will not be able to purify the air.
With the selection of a rectangular duct. its cross-sectional area must not be less than the cross-sectional area of the outlet spigot. And the connection is made through a suitable adapter.
How to attach the conduit to the hood and ventilation
If you decide to install a hood and use aluminum corrugated ducting, you will need to think about how to attach it to the body and to the ventilation. To do this you will need clamps of the right size. They can be metal or plastic.
To connect the hood to the ventilation system you will also need a special ventilation grille. It has a hole at the top to connect the duct pipe. The lower part has holes for removing air from the kitchen by means of natural circulation when the hood is not working.
For fixing the corrugation is suitable grille with a protrusion. around the hole there is a rim of a few centimeters, on which the corrugation is put, then it is fixed with a clamp of the right size.
Use the same principle of attaching the pleated duct to the hood. There is a ledge on it, on which a corrugation is put. The connection is tightened using a clamp.
How to attach the duct to the wall
For plastic ducts, there are special fasteners in the form of clips. They are first mounted on the wall with wall plugs. Installation pitch depends on the curvature of the route but on average 1 fixing per 50-60 cm is sufficient. You insert the ducts with a slight force into these clips during installation.
If the duct is to be fastened to the ceiling, the same brackets can be used. But if you need to maintain a certain distance from the ceiling, this type of installation is not suitable. In such cases, they take peorized hangers for plasterboard, fasten them to the ceiling, then to them with small screws PVC duct for the hood.
Corrugated ducts are attached to the walls with clamps or large plastic tighteners. If necessary, they can also be mounted to the ceiling using peorized aluminum hangers.
Where and how to bring the duct out
Most often the duct from the hood in the kitchen connected to the ventilation hole through which the natural ventilation (due to the draft). This is incorrect because in this case a large part of the grille is closed by the duct, and through the remaining available openings air exchange will be clearly insufficient.

If there is no separate ventilation duct but there is an outside wall nearby, you can take the pipe outside by placing a grille. These are two ways to have normal ventilation and ensure proper functioning of the hood.
How to get it outdoors
To install the hood and flue ducting into the wall, you must make a hole in the wall. And that’s the only difficulty. Then a duct is inserted into this hole and sealed with mortar. Outside the hole is closed by the lattice. to prevent debris, birds and small animals do not settle.

By the way, with a T-piece and a non-return valve you can install the hood so that it does not interfere with the natural ventilation in the kitchen. You will need a special ventilation grille for connecting hoods, non-return valve and T-piece. How does such a system work? When the hood is off, non-return valve blades are bent, the air from the kitchen into the vent duct through the grille and the open output of the tee. When the hood is turned on, the airflow from the hood reverses the valve plate and the air goes into the ventilation system. When the hood is turned off, the springs reopen the airflow through the tee.
Externally, such a system does not look very attractive and it must somehow be masked. But this is the only way to connect the hood to the only existing ventilation outlet and not reduce air exchange.
