What is laser hair removal?
First of all, however, it is worth to define what this procedure is. As previously mentioned, today there are many options for dealing with unwanted hairs. wax, shugaring, depilatory cream, razor. Each of them has its pros and cons. For example, the painfulness of the procedure and the duration of the effect. But all these methods have in common the fact that they do not actually affect the hair follicle, which is why the hair continues to grow even after the procedure.
And laser hair removal approaches the problem of unwanted hair from another side. The essence of the procedure is that the laser heats and destroys the hair follicle itself. This is what leads to the fact that the hair stops growing.
The session itself lasts from five minutes to half an hour, depending on the area. In this case, the specialist determines the mode of operation of the device based on the texture of the hairs, as well as the skin area.
Before the procedure, a special cooling gel is applied to the selected area, which also allows the laser arm to glide over the skin more freely. The gel itself is easy enough to remove after the procedure and does not cause any discomfort. In addition, after the session the specialist applies sunscreen on the skin.

Definitely!
Is it possible to name the exact number of sessions that are required to remove hair?
Natalia Grigorieva: No. The exact number of sessions depends on the type of laser radiation, power, size of the light spot and the cooling system of the particular laser (how much you can increase the heating of the follicle without pain or risk of burns for the patient). The diode laser LightSheer Duet removes dark hair for 4-6 sessions, light hair. for 5-8 sessions.
Elena Nasatskaya: No. Alexandrite laser Candela GentleLase removes dark hair in 10 to 12 sessions. It does not remove the blondes, but it slows their growth.
Carina Musaeva: No. Light methods and elo-epilation removes dark hair in 6-8 sessions, light hair. in 6-10 sessions. sessions may also be necessary for hormonally controlled areas: chin, upper lip, bikini and underarms. The laser removes hair that is in the active growth phase. On the legs, for example, in the stage of anagen at the same time is about 20% (i.e. to cover all 100% you will need at least five procedures). The hair growth cycle depends on various factors: gender, ethnicity, hormonal status.
Is it true that you can remove hair forever?
Elena Nasatskaya: No. The hair will be gone for five years, but we cannot predict further. Stress, childbirth and taking hormones can shorten this period.
Natalia Grigorieva: No. Only those hairs are permanently removed whose follicles have been completely destroyed. Damaged follicles will regenerate in a year or two and produce hair of the same “quality. There can appear single hairs after the hair removal course, it is normal. It is considered, that the hormonal failure can “to zero” the whole course, but there are no researches on this theme. Judging by my practice. this is a myth that waxing specialists scare their clients with.
Carina Musaeva: No. 5-20% of hair can regenerate, but it will grow back fine and weak. It is necessary to make supporting procedures 1-2 times a year for the result to be stable.
Should hair fall out during or immediately after treatment?
Natalia Grigorieva: Yes, if we speak about alexandrite laser and photoepilation. Photoepilation and alexandrite laser use hair shaft and tip 1-2 mm above skin surface as a heat conductor. This gives the effect of “total” loss here and now, but does not mean the destruction of the hair follicles. No. if we talk about diode laser. The diode laser penetrates deeper and does not burn the hair shaft. Before the procedure, they are shaved off, then they grow back and are gradually “pushed out”. The spit of the skin is formed in these areas.
Carina Musaeva: During hair removal with alexandrite laser, neodymium or multiplex, the hair is burned during the procedure. For an elos or diode laser procedure, the skin must be smoothly shaved. that is, the patient leaves with smooth skin after the procedure on either type of laser. The “dead” cores fall out within 10-20 days.
Elena Nasatskaya: It depends on the zone. During hair removal with alexandrite laser the existing hair falls out. Within 2-4 weeks terminal hair on the legs, arms, armpits and bikini zone grows, finally falls out and does not appear anymore. Above the upper lip hair does not grow back after the procedure.
Is it possible to wax the area with a tattoo?
Natalia Grigorieva: No. But small tattoos can be painted over with a special white pencil and then do not bypass this area.
Carina Musaeva: No. For the laser, the tattoo looks like Fitzpatrick type 4-6 skin. Two chromophores (hair melanin and exogenous tattoo pigment) compete for light absorption. It can lead to burns, keloids and hypertrophic scars.
Is it a contraindication for close veins?
Natalia Grigorieva: No. The light does not reach the depth of the veins and has no adverse effect on them.
Elena Nasatskaya: No. Contraindications are only: phlebitis (inflammation of the veins), thrombophlebitis and forms of varicose veins that require treatment.
Carina Musaeva: No. The positive side effect of laser hair removal is capillary removal. Light energy is absorbed by hemoglobin in blood cells and blood vessel walls, this causes them to heat up and destroy. The vessel disappears.
Laser hair removal is more effective than photo-?
Natalia Grigorieva: Yes. It is scientifically proved that laser hair removal is a way of permanent hair removal. But there is no any work to confirm the same thing about photoepilation. In most countries it is not used for hair removal, only for correction of pigment and vascular disorders.
Carina Musaeva: Yes. The laser is a targeted beam of light, while photoepilation is diffused. It damages but does not “kill” the follicles forever. Photoepilation procedure is more painful and longer.
Can pregnant women have laser hair removal??
Natalia Grigorieva: It is not necessary. Studies of light radiation on the body of pregnant women have not been conducted. Those who are only planning a pregnancy can have laser hair removal sessions.
Elena Nasatskaya: Manufacturer of Candela alexandrite laser officially allows to epilate from the 12th week of pregnancy on distant areas (not bikini and stomach). But I recommend to stop the procedures.
Carina Musaeva: The laser may not negatively influence the embryo development. But pregnant women’s hormonal background and sensitivity change sharply. pigmentation of the skin can be disturbed and the procedures will be less effective.
Epilation and depilation are different methods of hair removal. Their basic difference is the principle of action. In the first case the hair follicles are destroyed, and in the second case they are not affected. The result of the procedure is a smooth skin. Each method has advantages and disadvantages.
The main advantage of epilation is the prolonged growth of new hair. The effect lasts for several weeks to several years, which is related to the choice of hair removal method. Most often the disadvantage of these procedures is only the cost, such as laser hair removal.
Depilation is not able to provide a long-lasting effect after hair removal, because they continue to grow and often form ingrown hairs. However, the procedure can be performed independently at home, and the tools and means for them are sold in almost every store. They are used because of their simplicity and cheapness.
Laser hair removal procedure on the diode laser requires no special preparation. It is recommended to shave the hair in the area to be waxed the day before the procedure. It is necessary to reduce the energy loss of the laser beam and minimize pain. The permissible hair length. 2 mm.
WHAT IS VERY IMPORTANT is not to traumatize the hair follicle, which means not to wax, shugaring or other hair-pulling methods three weeks prior to laser hair removal procedures. Such traumatic procedures to the hair follicle will significantly reduce the effectiveness of the laser. Just it is applicable only in this aspect it is possible to speak about “hair regrowth” before laser application. During this period it is safely possible to shave them.
And between sessions, if you can’t make it to another treatment, it’s best to shave or trim the growing hair. It is also recommended not to tan for 4-7 days prior to the procedure.
Who is suitable and unsuitable for laser hair removal??
The diode laser unit works with almost all phototypes. Hair removal will be effective for people with fair skin as well as Asians, mulatto, Creoles and Sambo. The only people who are not suitable for this type of hair removal are African-Americans.
Despite the universality of the procedure, there are still a number of contraindications:
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding;
- Taking antibiotics, retinoids, St. John’s wort;
- Cancer diseases in the acute stage;
- Allergy to cold, acute allergic reactions in history or dermatitis;
- Severe uncompensated diseases of internal organs;
- Diseases, the course of which can be affected by exposure to intense color waves (lupus erythematosus, poria, sclerothemia);
- Any infectious diseases;
- Severe psychiatric disorders;
- Epilepsy;
- Herpes, wounds, abrasions or burns in the affected area;
- Age under 18 years old (because of hormonal development in adolescents).
Laser and photoepilation complications
The presence of unwanted hair is a problem for many people who are not satisfied with the existing methods of hair removal (shaving, waxing, chemical depilation, electroepilation) due to either short-term results, severe pain, or frequent complications (such as scarring after electroepilation). The invention of selective photothermolysis and the creation of different laser systems with different wavelength ranges have made effective and long-term hair removal possible. Currently, several types of laser and photo systems are used for hair removal: ruby laser (694 nm), alexandrite laser (755 nm), diode laser (800 nm), IPL-system (590-1200 nm), Nd:YAG-laser (1064 nm).
Epilation occurs through the destruction of the hair follicle, where the main pigment is melanin, which acts as a chromophore. a substance that absorbs radiation at a certain wavelength. With optimal wavelength, fluence and pulse duration, the melanin of the hair follicle is heated, and the hair follicle is destroyed. No damage to the surrounding tissue.
Compared with existing types of hair removal and depilation, laser hair removal destroys hair follicles quickly, accurately and precisely, which explains its high aesthetic result. Besides, hair removal with lasers and photo systems allows treating large surfaces of the skin quickly, with almost no pain and with minimal risk of complications. It is no coincidence that it has become one of the most popular of all aesthetic procedures performed with the help of quantum technologies. Laser and IPL systems, according to manufacturers, help remove unwanted hair quickly, safely and effectively. But numerous studies show that these hair removal methods are still not without side effects and complications.
Because of growing popularity of laser hair removal laser therapists, dermatologists, cosmetologists, general practitioners should be aware of possible complications and side effects of these procedures in order to diagnose and treat them correctly and in time.
Top 10 common myths about laser hair removal
Although laser hair removal has been around for about 20 years, it is still regarded with caution. People operate with notions from the past, such as “laser will not remove blond hair”. Or they believe all kinds of myths that people with no medical training have invented.
Laser hair removal is actually an effective and scientifically proven procedure. Since its invention, it has already been improved many times, there are new types of lasers that work on any skin phototype. Let’s dispel 10 myths that prevent you from completely getting rid of your hair with a laser.
Myth Laser hair removal is harmful to health
The laser works this way: the device emits rays that are absorbed by certain molecules. They convert light energy into heat energy, which destroys the target molecules. All modern lasers have a fairly good cooling system, so the skin surrounding the hair does not overheat. The laser beam does not penetrate deeper than the integumentary tissue.
This heating is the only effect of the laser on the body. It is not any different from the heat one gets in a hot bath, sauna or in the sun with a sunblock on his skin. Those waves which can cause skin malignancies (these are ultraviolet waves) are not present in the laser beam.
Myth Laser hair removal is painful
The reason the procedures hurt is because it affects the nerve fibers that are located in the skin. These fibers are “tuned” differently in each of us, so we all feel the pain differently. Where one will say the pain was unbearable, the other will rate it as a slight tingle.
At laser hair removal beams don’t influence directly on nerve fibers. The “targets” for them are either melanin or hemoglobin, which are not present in the nerve. Pain during the procedure can be caused by only one thing: the heating of the tissues.
To reduce the heat impact, laser manufacturers use different cooling systems. It could be:
- The contact system when the cooling element touches the skin;
- cryogenic system, which involves injecting freon onto heated skin;
- The air system where the cloths cool the air.
For the time being, air cooling is the optimal method. It allows you to reduce the temperature of the skin before, during and after the laser treatment. Consequently, the procedure is carried out with minimal pain.
An air cooling system is installed, for example, on Cynosure lasers. Apogee and Elite MPX.
Myth Laser hair removal produces scars
Scars form when the integrity of the basal membrane of the epidermis, a special “bridge” located at the border of the surface and deep skin layers is violated. During laser hair removal, the beam energy is absorbed by the melanin contained in the hair or the hemoglobin of the vessel which feeds the hair. The basal membrane, which contains neither melanin, nor hemoglobin, is not damaged.
Myth Blond hair will not be removed by laser
This is true. if the procedure is performed with this type of laser, which acts only on melanin (the dark pigment of the hair). alexandrite and diode laser types “are capable” of it.
Fortunately, there is a solution. This is hair removal with a neodymium laser. Its energy will be absorbed by the hemoglobin of the vessel that feeds the hair, and will not “affect” the melanin. The gold standard for such hair removal is the Cynosure Elite MPX laser. It consists of two types of laser. alexandrite and neodymium. Parameters of the device are precisely adjusted by the doctor, allowing removal of any color hair. This laser can also be used on tanned skin: the energy will not be absorbed by skin melanin and will not cause burns.
Myth The hair will be gone after the first session already
Unfortunately, this is not true. All the hair that nature has “programmed” on a given area of the skin does not grow at the same time. Some of it is always dormant and grows back over time. The same hair that is visible now (which is only 5-20%) “goes dormant” with time.
Any laser can treat only actively growing hair. You must have 3 or more sessions to remove everything.
Myth Laser makes hair tougher, it grows faster
After each session, the hair grows back finer, smaller and slower. The paradoxical effect can be observed only once, after the second session. This is called synchronization and indicates the effectiveness of the procedure. The third session all this vegetation is removed, and after that the hair grows slowly, becoming softer.
The bonus, inherent only to laser hair removal, is that the procedure improves skin appearance: lightens it, tightens, evens the micro relief.
Myth Laser hair removal is expensive
Laser hair removal will get rid of hair for 3-8 sessions, which are held once in 1,5-3 months. After that for many years (it depends on a hormonal background) it is possible not to recollect about hair growth in the laser-treated area. And how much money is spent during this time on various devices for shaving? And on shugaring or wax depilation, if you go to the salon? Actually it is several times better.
In addition, all these depilatory, that is not acting on the hair follicle procedures, require a fairly tangible investment of time. at least 30 minutes every 3-4 weeks. A session of laser hair removal, for example, on a laser Cynosure Elite MPX, lasts only 10-30 minutes once every 1,5-3 months.
Myth Laser can remove hair only on women
Most lasers are better at removing the thick, dark hairs that grow on men. If to go through the procedure on the device with a good cooling system (for example, air), then the pain sensations are minimal.
Skin after laser hair removal red and swollen for some time, but it is impossible to understand that some cosmetology procedure was conducted on it.
Myth Photoepilation is better than laser
Photoepilation is treatment of hair with a beam of special light beams. They come in a wide band, with different wavelengths. The most dangerous of them are cut off by the filter, but many of them reach the skin, where they affect different molecules. not only the melanin of the hair. This indiscriminate absorption of light warms up the tissues, so photoepilation. the procedure is painful and uncomfortable.
Myth Laser hair removal can be done at home
Laser devices are devices for professional use. There are various risks in using them. Not knowing the technique of safety, you can get a skin burn, damage the structures of the eye, the appearance of pigment spots and areas of depigmentation. Therefore the procedures can be carried out only by a doctor, who has received special training.
Thus, laser hair removal in the hands of a professional and with professional equipment is a safe and effective procedure. Don’t listen to myths that have no scientific basis.

Varicose veins is one of the contraindications for laser hair removal. However, this instruction is more of a recommendation. To understand whether or not you can really use laser hair removal in the presence of varicose veins, it is necessary to describe how the two phenomena interact.
Which laser is better: diode or alexandrite?
The advantage of the alexandrite laser is a visible result immediately after the procedure, because the hair literally burns off. But it’s also a huge disadvantage, because the hair burns off its entire shaft, and it’s very painful. Diode laser is softer on the action.
What is the difference between photoepilation and laser hair removal?
The technology and principle of these procedures is very similar, but there is a huge difference (as between two car models, such as Zhiguli and Mercedes). In laser hair removal, the beam is narrowly focused (for example, in a diode laser 808 nanometers) and is well absorbed by the melanin of the hair.
Can I shave hair after laser hair removal??
Yes, after laser hair removal you can shave hair two days after the session, then shave as needed. You will notice that you do it much less often, you will stop feeling discomfort after shaving, and the process itself will take less effort and time.
Is it possible to do laser hair removal on the face?
Yes. The main condition for laser hair removal is dark hair. If you have white, red, gray facial hair, it will not take laser.
Unwanted facial hair is a problem not only for men, but also for women. Hair in this area looks unaesthetic and spoils even a very attractive appearance. Laser hair removal is one of the most modern, popular and effective ways to eliminate this problem.
Facial hair grows very fast (think of men, many of whom have to shave every day) and fighting for smooth skin is a constant challenge. Women have to tweeze the eyebrow hairs almost every day, and recently depilated moustache becomes visible in a few days after the procedure.
That’s why it’s important that the method you use has the longest possible effect, ideally for life. None of the above methods can boast this, unlike laser hair removal, which maintains, if not lifelong, at least multi-year effects.
The technology of laser hair removal lies in the fact that the narrow beam of radiation is directed from close range to the skin. Makes the pigment in the root of the hair boil, which destroys the hair follicle and the blood, lymphatic vessels feeding it. A hair with a dead root falls out after a couple of weeks.
Sometimes the disadvantage of laser hair removal on the face is its alleged painfulness. But it really doesn’t. Painful was the procedure with the ruby laser, which entered the beauty industry in the sixties. Because of the relatively small (694 nm) wavelength, it worked only with dark hair and only on light skin. And even left burns on it. But technology has continued to evolve.
In addition, laser facial hair removal has advantages such as:
- Comfort. As with most beauty procedures, this factor depends on the experience and the light hand of the master. But in any self-respecting clinic, the patient’s skin will be treated with anesthetic. And only the most sensitive ones can feel a tingling sensation.
- The speed. Treats an area the size of the palm of your hand in at most 15 seconds. Even with all related procedures, completely laser facial hair removal will take about half an hour
- Convenience. No ingrown hairs, itching and stubble.
- Aesthetics. The skin does not turn blue from the translucent roots, as after shaving. No red spots.
- Price. Laser is not much more expensive than a shugaring. Even including the price of accessories.
Compared with wax and sugar, laser hair removal on the face has the most significant advantage is the durability (a year to several) of the effect.
What kinds of lasers are used in the procedure?
Several types of laser units are used for hair removal. Which laser is right for you depends on your phototype and hair color: some have light, thin and barely noticeable hair, while others have dark, thick and dense hair. Different types of hair are effectively affected by lasers with different wavelengths.
The ruby laser operates at 694 nm. This is a short wavelength, so at Cleo Line we do not use the ruby unit, preferring more modern and effective options:
Alexandrite laser has a wavelength of up to 755 nm. It is suitable for owners of sensitive skin, who have red or blond hair. In one flash of the device does not cover the largest area of the skin, but absolutely all the force of radiation is directed to the hair, so the effect you can see immediately after the procedure.
Diode laser is considered the most versatile. It has a wavelength of 810 nm, suitable for women and men with any skin type and hair structure. This laser is helpful in the fight against hypertrichosis or excessive vegetation. After exposure, hair is softer and less noticeable at first, then it stops growing altogether. Diode laser works faster than alexandrite laser The radiation covers a larger area, so the procedure is shortened. Diode laser is safer: burns and other undesirable effects are extremely rare after its use.
The neodymium laser has the longest wavelength of 1063 nm, so it easily removes dark hair and epilates dark and dark-skinned skin (IV-VI phototypes). We also use neodymium units for the treatment of acne and for scar resurfacing. The beam from a neodymium laser does not damage healthy skin and tissue, it only affects the nourishing vessel and the hair follicle, and destroys them without possibility of repair.
