Speedfan is the most popular free application with a Russian.speaking intese. Among its functions:

Now you need to find a wire with power, in the gap of which we mount the resistor. This cooler has 3 wires: black (GND), red (12V) and yellow (tachometric contact).
Now we need a variable resistor with a resistance of 100-300 Ohms and a 2-5 W power. My cooler is designed for 0.18 A and 1.7 W. If the resistor is designed for lower power than the power in the circuit, then it will bask and in the end. he will burn. As suggests, Exdeniz, for our purposes, PPB-3A 3W 220 Ohms is perfect for our purposes. Such as my variable resistor, 3 contacts. Now we mount the fan into the case and find a suitable place for fastening the resistor.
The resistor has a nut for attaching to the plane. Please note that the body is metal and can close the resistor contacts and it will not work, so cut the insulator from plastic or cardboard. My contacts do not close, fortunately, so there are no gaskets in the photo.
Now the most important thing is the field test.
I turned on the system, opened the BP body and found the hottest section with a pyrometer (this is an element, it seems like a transistor that is cooled by a radiator). Then he closed, twisted the resistor for maximum speed and waited for 20-30 minutes the element heated to 26.3 ° C.
Then he put the resistor half, noise no longer heard, I waited for 30 minutes again the element heated to 26.7 ° C.
Again, I lower the momentum to a minimum (~ 100 Ohms), I wait 30 minutes, I can’t hear any noise from the cooler at all The element was heated to 28.1 ° C.
I do not know what kind of element it is and what is its operating temperature, but I think that it will withstand more degrees 5-10. But if you consider that there was no noise resistor on the “half”, then we do not need anything else! =)
