Floor Fan Repair with Your Hands. All the reasons why it won’t spin and how to disassemble.

On the hottest summer days, the only salvation from the sweltering heat is a regular floor fan.

Not everyone can afford a full-fledged split system or even a mobile conditioner.

But unfortunately, even this inexpensive and affordable windblower, breaks down from time to time. Especially Chinese models fly like sunflower seeds.

And they are in our market in the vast majority. What to do if the fan stopped rotating and working? What are its main weaknesses and why it breaks?

In total it is possible to distinguish 5 main causes of floor fans failure:

The main problem of cheap models, which for some reason not many people pay attention to. The wrong casting of the blades. It causes imbalance, broken bearings, increased clearances.

You can not influence it, because you have already bought the fan with this initial defect. Sometimes it seems to work, the impeller rotates normally, but it does not blow.

That is, there is no cooling airflow from it. Why is this happening??

Because of the wrong angle of attack of the blades. Its blades are deformed and transmit the air flow in a circle, instead of blowing it out.

To access the motor bearing you need to remove the gearbox. It is mounted on three screws and is supported from below by a pull rod.

Loosen the screws and disconnect the rod. The gearbox is then removed from the shaft and you have access to the rear bushing.

There is no need to unscrew or disassemble anything else. Wetting oil will do the rest.

Put a thin tube of WD40 on the can and spray a few times in the gap between the shaft and the bearing.

After spraying with WD40, turn the shaft by hand in different directions and move it back and forth a little.

Excess thickened grease, debris and dust will slowly come out. That excess dirt is easily removed with a cotton swab.

If you have a thick grease such as Citim or Lithol, it is advisable to apply it to the gear worm. After these cleaning procedures, drop a few drops of sewing machine oil on the outside of the bearing.

Just don’t apply it too much. Otherwise, it subsequently spreads all over the place and the dust adheres to it, turning back into dirt. You end up with the wedge and the rotation problem of the fan again.

Some models have felt washers near the bushings. They are impregnated with oil and when heated, the oil drips onto the shaft, lubricating it.

Reassemble in reverse order. Traction. The three screws on the gearbox. outer cover.

With the rear bearing solved, now move on to the front of the fan. There is a protective cap in the center.

The principle is the same. First you squeeze out and soften the old grease and dirt with liquid cleaner, then apply the new grease.

After that you put the propeller back on and close the cap. After finishing the repair turn on the fan at high speed and after running it a few minutes switch it to the needed speed.

If the damage is more complicated and simple lubrication does not help, you have to disassemble the fan in detail.

First do all the manipulations of the disassembly as above. After removing the propeller, unscrew the plastic front locknut that is right behind it and remove the whole protective frame.

In the hands you have the motor itself and the leg, in which the power wires and the pushbutton mechanism is located.

Take apart this leg by unscrewing the 6 tapping screws.

The first thing to do is to check the solder wires. It is possible that one or more of them fell off or burnt out.

If it is intact, how do you know which wire is going where and what it is for?? Begin the test with two wires from the power plug.

One of them, let it be black (as in the photo below), through the light bulb goes directly to the fan motor.

The second wire goes to the lower terminal of the dial switch (button 0).

Then, by pressing the corresponding buttons. 1st speed, 2nd, 3rd, one or the other contacts of the switch are closed, and thus the speed of the motor changes.

Each wire from these buttons goes to a different terminal on the winding, with more or fewer turns. By putting voltage on them, you make the propeller spin faster or slower.

The other contact group opens at that moment.

Sometimes these contacts get burned out or don’t reach their plate. Then you lose one of the speeds.

All this is checked elementary with Chinese multimeter, in a circuit checker mode.

If you break the very first wire, or there is no contact on it, the fan motor just will not start. So when the fan is completely off, check it first.

If you have checked beforehand if the plug and its power cord are faultless. This can also be done with a tester.

Place one end of the probe on the plug pin and touch the other end to the contact pad on the “0” button. If correct, there should be zero resistance.

Then you can check the wires on all speeds in the same way. The contact probe on the plug. with another probe on the lead that goes from the corresponding speed button to the motor.

If there are zeros everywhere, then your switch and wires are working.

Then you check the second contact on the plug and the wire that goes directly past the switch to the engine. Make sure that you have an intact cord here as well.

Only after that can you move on to checking the windings of the motor itself.

Use a multimeter to set the resistance to 2000 ohms. Next, to avoid biting out the wires anywhere, at the point where the capacitor is connected, strip a little insulation.

Look for common ground as in the diagram below.

Having found it, you call the resistance of the winding. To do it, touch the contacts on the switch with the second probe in turn.

Of course they can vary a little from model to model, but the most important thing is that there is no interruption or short circuit. Measurements can show several hundred ohms and a bit more than 1 kOhm.

It depends on the power of the fan and the wire size.

The resistance between the winding pins is already smaller. 100-200 Ohm.

Also check the capacitor winding and the total resistance of all windings combined.

If checking the continuity of the windings does not indicate any anomalies or defects, go ahead. To do this you disassemble the fan to its bare bones.

First you have to free the motor from all the plastic parts. Unscrew the 4 screws on the front side and remove the cover.

On new models besides the screws there are also latches. You need to bend them with a screwdriver.

To disconnect the leg, you need to find another screw, which is usually hidden under the plug.

Loosen it and pull out the mounting shaft. To disassemble the wires that go through the leg, you will need to bite them out or solder them out from the terminals on the speed buttons.

At the same time, write down or sketch which one was originally plugged in.

As a result, you should have in your hands a bare fan motor without anything else.

Take it apart. Unscrew the screws that fasten the back cover.

In doing so, be sure to mark on all covers and hardware before disassembling how everything was originally assembled.

Otherwise you will lose alignment if you don’t reattach it correctly. There will be problems with jamming of the shaft and rotation of the blades.

After removing the bearing, you get to the windings themselves. Among the bundle of power wires coming from the switch, look for a special thermostat.

It’s very common for a motor to stop working after it burns out. This relay must operate and open the circuit, at a winding temperature of 135-145 degrees.

After cooling, the relay closes again and the fan starts. So, sometimes it burns out completely and actually plays the role of a fuse.

If your fan began to turn off frequently and restart independently, this protection is to blame. Know that it does not work for no reason. That means you either have a jammed shaft or the windings are overheating.

Overheating of the windings can be caused by the breakdown of a small impeller that sits on the shaft inside the motor itself. It is designed to blow and reduce the temperature of the windings.

You don’t have a temperature sensor-relay on the cheapest models. Proceeding from this, if your “thermal fuse” burned out, it can certainly be bypassed and start the fan. But it will leave you without fire protection.

Between its legs there should be a circuit in the mode of the wire.

If all parts and relays are intact inside, all you have to do is look carefully through a magnifying glass at the winding, shaft and rotor. You might see some torn or torn copper wires.

It happens when the bearing pops out of its seat and the rotor starts to beat on the windings.

How to install a rechargeable fan

At modern Chinese floor fans, quite often the screw connection between the two halves of the motor loosens. Do not forget that the shaft on both sides, put on self-centering copper-graphite bushings, which are tightly locked in the covers.

When assembling and tightening them, you can lightly tap the transformer iron itself with a hammer so that the shaft turns easily, with little inertia. Some people try to catch the center by themselves and make this silent horror.

Unfortunately, a mechanical defect in the winding or rotor, or a short circuit inside the winding, cannot be solved by yourself. It is not rational to rewind the motors of cheap wind turbines, it is much easier to buy a new model.
