Galaxy’s Edge: Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber Building Experience. Edge of the Galaxy lightsaber

New ‘Peace and Justice’ ‘Power and Control’ Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber Parts Available at Hollywood Studios

Guests building a custom lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge now have new options! We stopped by Disney’s Hollywood Studios today to find that there were new “scrap metal” parts available for guests partaking in the Savi’s Workshop experience. First, here’s a look at the merchandise sheet with all of the current options.

Of the current options, the “Power and Control” and “Peace and Justice” options contain new parts. Cast Members did not have a display drawer available, but did have two lightsabers built with some of the options. Here’s a look!

Savi’s Workshop

Savi’s Workshop is an upcharge experience in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge that allows guests to built their own lightsaber in an intimate workshop complete with an immersive narrative element. The backstory is that a secretive group of Gatherers have dedicated their lives to restoring the balance in the Galaxy by passing on their knowledge of Jedi lore and the Force. These Master Gatherers will guide you through their workshop and assist you in customizing and building your own unique lightsaber. You can choose your destiny by picking one of the paths below.

Peace and Justice

Salvaged scraps from fallen Jedi temples and crashed starships in these Republic-era designs honor the Galaxy’s former guardians.

Power and Control

Originally forged by dark side warriors, this style features rumored remnants from the Sith homeworld and abandoned temples.

Elemental Nature

This theme embodies the Force – an energy by all living things, like Brylark trees, Cartusion whale bones, and Rancor teeth.

Protection and Defense

Hilt materials bear mysterious motifs and inscriptions that reconnect users with the ancient wellspring of the Force.

Galaxy’s Edge: Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber Building Experience

Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland and Disney World is a rare opportunity for Star Wars fans to live out their dreams of being part of the story. The Savi’s Workshop lightsaber building experience is a chance to make your Star Wars dreams come true, but what it the experience really like, and is Savi’s Workshop worth it?

Savi’s Workshop Location

Savi’s Workshop is tucked into a small alcove between Dok Ondar’s Den of Antiquities and Droid Depot in Galaxy’s Edge at both Disneyland and Disney World.

Do I Need A Reservation For Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber Building Experience?

There is limited space for Savi’s Workshop lightsaber building experience, so reservations are highly recommended. Reservations for Savi’s Workshop are booked 60 days in advance at both Disney World and Disneyland. Each builder at Disney World can have one guest in the workshop, while each builder at Disneyland can have two guests.

Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber Building Experience

The lightsaber building experience at Savi’s Workshop starts with choosing one of four lightsaber styles. Before you pay for your Savi’s Workshop lightsaber a cast member provides a lightsaber “menu” to help you choose. Here you can see the specific options available for each of the 4 lightsaber styles.

Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber Styles

Peace and Justice

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

The Peace and Justice lightsabers are modeled after the Republic Era lightsabers of Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker. These relics are collected by Savi’s gatherers from crashed starships and old Jedi temples.

Power and Control

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

There is a very obvious Sith influence in the Power and Control lightsabers with strong black and red accents like those wielded by Darth Vader, Darth Maul, and Kylo Ren. These lightsaber scraps are salvaged from the Sith homeworld and abandoned temples.

Elemental Nature

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

The Elemental Nature lightsaber choices incorporate natural materials like Rancor teeth, Brylark trees, and Cartusion whale bones. These lightsabers are a reminder that the Force flows through all living things.

Protection and Defense

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

Elizabeth opted for Protection and Defense. These scraps are the oldest and most mysterious of the lightsaber choices. The pieces bear ancient inscriptions and remind me of the lightsabers used by the Jedi Temple Guards in K anan’s vision during an episode of Star Wars Rebels.

After you choose one of these four lightsaber options it is time to pay for your Savi’s Workshop lightsaber experience. At the register you are given a special pin and a boarding pass.

The pin represents the type of lightsaber you chose and needs to be worn “over your heart” according to cast members. This pin helps the gatherers inside Savi’s Workshop know which pieces to bring to your station.

Waiting For The Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber Experience

You check in with a gatherer and enter a small gated area. This is where you wait until the next building experience begins. While you are here explore the metal case with real lightsaber pieces. This can help you pre-plan your final lightsaber design.

The wait is usually only about 10 or 15 minutes. Then a gatherer will ask you to follow them into Savi’s Workshop.

Entering Savi’s Workshop

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

Pick any available building station once inside the workshop. The building station area is a large oval with an opening on one side for the gathers to enter.

For the best view of the main Savi’s Workshop gatherer, pick a building station that faces the opening, but don’t worry if none of these spots are available. Much of the Savi’s Workshop lightsaber building experience is focused on working at your station and audio that can be heard throughout.

The head gatherer is an impressive storyteller who talks about the relic gathering process, explains the kyber crystals including examples of Jedi and Sith who have used each color, and then announces the time to finally build your lightsaber.

Building Your Lightsaber

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

There is one gatherer for every two builders to help and answer any questions that you have while building. The first part of building your lightsaber is to close your eyes to FOCUS on the Force and then choose the kyber crystal that speaks to you.

Place your chosen kyber crystal on a special holder on the building station while the gatherer places a tray with all the available lightsaber hilt pieces in front of you. Insert your kyber crystal into the center of the chassis or core of the lightsaber. The crystal sings when it is properly placed in the core.

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

Next choose one of two available activation plates to protect your kyber crystal. Then add two of the four sleeve choices to cover most of the plain gray core. Lastly add one of two pommel cap options to the bottom and one of two emitter options to the top of your lightsaber.

Now your gatherer will inspect your lightsaber. Activation can be dangerous, so builders are directed to step back and the gatherers place your lightsaber in the activation chamber. Then you approach your lightsaber hilt, turn it on, and the room lights up with the glow of everyone’s lightsabers.

Each builder is given a padded sheath carrying case as they exit the workshop. These cases make it easier to carry your lightsaber around Galaxy’s Edge.

Here’s a video of our lightsaber building experience:

Savi’s Workshop Custom Lightsaber Cost

A Savi’s Workshop lightsaber costs 249.99 per lightsaber plus tax. There are no annual passholder discounts available.

What’s Included In The Cost?

The lightsaber, carrying case and one kyber crystal is included in the cost of Savi’s Workshop lightsaber building experience.

What Color Kyber Crystals Are Available?

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

The Savi’s Workshop lightsaber building experience offers a choice of blue, green, red, or violet kyber crystals. Buy additional kyber crystals in white, yellow, or the super rare black at Dok Ondar’s.

Switching out a kyber crystal is easy. Loosen the pommel cap, emitter, and each sleeve a bit to expose the activation plates. Pop the plates open and switch out the kyber crystal. The crystal will sing once inserted properly. Rotate the kyber crystal in place and then replace the activation plates before retightening the other pieces.

Can I Ship My Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber Home?

Lightsabers can be shipped to your home in either Dok Ondar’s or Droid Depot. The cost of shipping varies based on shipping destination.

Can I Bring My Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber On A Plane?

Yes, the Transportation Security Administration specifically allows lightsabers through security in either carry-on or checked bags. Savi’s Workshop lightsabers do not collapse to a smaller size and most airlines consider it your carry-on item since it goes in the overhead bin.

This means your lightsaber replaces a roller bag carry-on, but you can still have a personal item for under the seat in front of you. The lightsaber sheath is padded, but I was still nervous about putting it in the overhead bin. This anxiety was worse after watching people shove roller bags in the bins on our plane ride to Galaxy’s Edge. To minimize risk of damage I found a full bin and slipped the lightsaber in front of the items already inside. Then when we landed I retrieved the lightsaber from the bin before those with the larger bags.

Can I Use My Custom Lightsaber In Galaxy’s Edge?

No lightsaber duels are allowed in Galaxy’s Edge, but that isn’t too surprising. However, you can take your Savi’s Workshop lightsaber out while walking around most of Batuu. The lightsabers make for great photo opportunities and some of the photos even turn out better at night when you can see the colorful glow of the blade.

The only place we were told to put our “scrap metal away” was in the queue for Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run.

Final Thoughts On Our Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber Building Experience

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

Savi’s Workshop was a fantastic, immersive experience for my little Star Wars fan. In fact, it was her favorite activity of the whole trip. I love the detail on the Protection and Defense lightsaber hilt. There are realistic looking scratches, markings, and imperfections that make the pieces feel like true relics.

There are other subtle things about the lightsaber, too. When the kyber crystal is first inserted in the core it sings. Activating the lightsaber without the blade makes a crackling noise, but when the blade is in it makes the perfect lightsaber noises when moved around.

Savi’s Workshop lightsabers are extremely heavy and solid. These are truly a collector item and not the same toy lightsabers we have previously owned. This was certainly a splurge on our Galaxy’s Edge trip, but seeing the joy on my daughter’s face when her Savi’s Workshop lightsaber lit up for the first time made it worth every penny.

If you are looking for a lower cost Galaxy’s Edge custom building experience consider building your own droid at Droid Depot. Check here for our full review of the droid building process or watch the experience instead.

Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney World’s Hollywood Studios

A unique and immersive experience (and not a free one), Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers blends the boundaries between a traditional retail experience and a theme-park attraction. A small group of 14 guests will be guided through constructing their very own lightsabers, choosing from a notable assortment of different pieces and parts to create their own perfectly-customized laser sword.

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

Who is Savi?

Savi is an older human man who grew up – and was lifelong friends – with Lor San Tekka, the retired explorer who helped Jedi Master Luke Skywalker find the very first Jedi temple (and who was recently killed by Luke’s nephew, Kylo Ren, at the very beginning of Episode VII: The Force Awakens). Like Lor, Savi is a member of the Church of the Force, a relatively recent addition to the Star Wars mythos that sees non-Force-sensitives still attempt to follow the Jedi philosophy; he’s moved by the belief that the teachings of the Jedi Knights should still be kept alive and cherished by the Galaxy at large.

His salvage business, called Savi Son Salvage (a playful wink to the ’70s sitcom Sanford Son and its central location of Sanford Son Salvage), is the chief means that the old junker attempts to honor the Jedi Code. While he does, indeed, rebuild old vessels or other pieces of technology that he comes across, his main, surreptitious work is to sift through the refuse for any hidden Jedi or Sith artifacts – particularly lightsaber pieces, which he has been secretly stockpiling for, apparently, years now. He tends to hire only those individuals who have been touched by the Force in some way, who he calls Gatherers and who he takes exceedingly good care of, and though he has pledged to not take action yet in that great conflict between the light and dark sides of the Force that’s sweeping the Galaxy once again, he has vowed to do so once the time is right.

In the meantime, Savi’s main goal has been getting all those reclaimed or rebuilt lightsabers into the hands of those who could use them – Force-sensitives who can one day rise up and help to restore balance to the Force.

How old do I have to be to build a lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop?

Disney recommends that builders be at least five years of age, but please note that one member of their parties must be 14.

Reservations at Savi’s Workshop

Reservations are routinely accepted at Savi’s Workshiop – Handbuilt Lightsaber, given its popularity and how only 14 “builder” spots are available per session – you can make reservations up to 180 days before your visit here or via the My Disney Experience app. (Just be aware that a credit card guarantee is required, meaning that if you don’t cancel at least one day prior to your appointment, you will be charged the full 199.99 “builder fee” per person in your party.)

You can arrive no earlier than 15 minutes before your reservation time at the check-in location in front of Savi Son Salvage. Just ensure that everyone in your party is present and waiting with you.

How does the Savi’s Workshop process work?

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

First things first: although there are only 14 “builder” slots available per session, each participant is allowed to bring one family member or friend along to take photos and otherwise admire the handiwork of her would-be Jedi swordsmith.

Once your arrival time comes, you will make your way to Savi’s Scrapyard, check in with a Gatherer in front of the storefront, and be presented with the four different lightsaber hilt styles (with the descriptions provided directly by Disney):

  • Peace and Justice – utilizes salvaged scraps of fallen Jedi temples and crashed starships. The simple designs are Old Republic-era and reflect the commitment and devoutness of the Galaxy’s former guardians.
  • Power and Control – originally forged by warriors from the dark side, objects used in this lightsaber style are rumored remnants from the Sith homeworld of Moraband and abandoned temples. The shapes here are sharp and strong and meant to showcase the brutality and relentlessness of the Sith Lords’ insatiable desire for power and control.
  • Elemental Nature – craft your lightsaber from special components born from the Force – an energy field created by all living things – like Brylark trees, Cartusion whale bones, and, even, Rancor teeth.
  • Protection and Defense – cultivated from a time forgotten, these earliest lightsaber pieces contain designs and inscriptions that are shrouded in mystery. Believed to be created for protection and defense, conferring anonymity and symbolizing emotional detachment, a laser sword made from these pieces reconnects the user with the most ancient wellspring of the Force.

(Curious where the references to Brylark trees and Cartusion whale bones come from? An episode of the animated series The Clone Wars, which shows Jedi Master Yoda leading a clutch of younglings to select their own kyber crystals so that they can build their very own lightsabers.)

Once you make your selection, you will be given a cloisonne pin to identify your choice – and then you’ll make your way inside.

How do you make your own lightsaber?

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

Savi’s actual workshop, formally called the Chamber of the Guardians, is filled with “unusual parts, whimsical pieces, and miscellaneous memorabilia collected from the far reaches of the Galaxy.” This explains where all of the various lightsaber pieces come from and just may justify a surprise or two that occurs over the course of the 20-minute experience.

At the center of the chamber is the large, oval-shaped Builder’s Table, which has been fashioned out of ancient pieces that were salvaged from across the Galaxy and which is where, unsurprisingly, the construction process occurs. Once at your station, you will be asked to select a kyber crystal, a living crystal that is Force-attuned and which generates the energy needed to project the blade of the lightsaber; all four colors from the movies are included here – the Jedi’s blue, green, and purple and the Sith’s red – and you will need to pick just one.

From there, a Gatherer will present you with a tray of various lightsaber components that correspond with the cloisonne pin that you’re wearing. These pieces consist of:

  • One hilt
  • Four sleeves (guests get to pick two)
  • Two emitters (pick one)
  • Two pommel caps (pick one)
  • Two sets of activation plates and switches (pick one)

Once builders have finished constructing their hilt, the Gatherers will, well, gather up the unused components and return them to Savi’s inventory for the next group to use.

The final step in the process is the connection of the lightsaber hilt to the blade itself, which is 36″ long and, yes, really lights up. Once again, the workshop employees will assist with this task, giving it the appearance of a ritual.

At a few key points throughout the build session, certain special effects will be activated – again, not unlike what one sees in Universal’s Ollivander’s Wand Shop – in order to incorporate elements of mystery and magic into the proceedings. While these are nothing too elaborate (different-colored lights radiate across the ceiling), they do culminate in the cameo appearance of an “old friend” – Jedi Master Yoda himself, whose voice fills the chamber and whose dialogue is reminiscent of that previously-mentioned Clone Wars episode.

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

How much does Savi’s Workshop cost?

Even though Disney initially said that the various lightsaber pieces would vary in price, it turns out the company has opted to go the much simpler route of charging per finished product: each lightsaber costs 199.99, plus tax, a price which includes a carrying case.

There are no refunds available at Savi’s Workship – Handbuilt Lightsabers, it should be noted, nor are there any discounts (such as from being an annual passholder).

OI fun fact

The kyber crystals are more than just for changing the color of your lightsaber blade – they also can interact with the holocron cubes that are sold at Dok-Ondar’s, which will unlock the teachings from long-gone Jedi and Sith (depending upon the nature of the crystal).

Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers Review – Galaxy’s Edge – Disneyland California – Is Savi’s Workshop Worth It?

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

When Disney opened up Galaxy’s edge one of the most exciting experiences the new Outpost offered was the opportunity to build your very own Lightsaber. The experience offers the chance to take part in a traditional Light saber ceremony where you construct and activate your very own custom lightsaber that you get to take him.

However, the experience is not a cheap one and is infact one of the most costly experiences you will find at Disneyland. Sure, you get to keep the lightsaber, which is pretty high quality, but it’s still a very hefty lump to add on to your Disney trip. ao is Is Savi’s Workshop Worth It? Should you really spend this considerable sum on an overpriced toy? Or is the Experience everything you imagine and more? Find out in our Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers Review to learn everything you need to know about this unique Disneyland Attraction.

What is Savi’s Workshop

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

Savi’s Workshop is Dinsey’s flagship paid experience at Galaxy’s Edge. Giving you the chance to custom build your very own lightsaber and partake in the now legendary light-saber ceremony.

Every Builder, who pays the 219.99 entry fee gets to partake in the ceremony and build their very own high-quality custom Lightsaber, which they can take home with them to keep. It has fast become one of the most popular must-do activities for anyone visiting Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland. Here is everything you need to know about building your very own lightsaber.

How Much Is Savi’s Workshop?

219.99 plus tax

This is not a cheap experience, and even when you factor in the lightsaber itself it’s still a very expensive addition, especially if you have multiple kids all wanting to build one!

For the 219.99 you get the experience, a force allegiance badge/pin, the finished lightsaber, and a carry case. The Builder can be accompanied by up to 2 guests who will not get to build a lightsaber but can take part in the “Ceremony”. Builders should be 4 and at least one member of the party 14

You will need a park reservation and a valid park ticket, for Disneyland Park California (or Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Florida). Reservations are available from 60 days out, and apart from at really busy times quite easy to get. Don’t hang around, but there is often availability, even if you leave it till the day of your visit, don’t even rule out walk-up availability, but don’t count on it either. The experience is certainly not as popular as it was on day 1.

There is a fairly tough One Day Cancellation policy. Essentially if you need to cancel you must do this one day before other wise you will be charged full price, 219.99 Tax, and receive nothing! A credit card is needed to reserve the experience, however, it is not charged until you are at check-in choosing your style. They are pretty flexible with the times, so if something goes wrong and you are stuck in a queue and late, make sure you still head on over as they will usually accommodate you, but if you are a No-Show they will just charge the Credit Card.

Disneyland California

While we are focusing mainly on the Disneyland California version of the experience, it is largely the same as Disney’s Hollywood Studios version, so most of this information is interchangeable.

Savi’s Workshop Experience

Warning Spoilers! – There are some surprises in the ceremony and we would hate o spoil them for you. So if you want to keep the surprise, don’t watch the below video, if you read our description below there is a lot that is useful before we get to the Surprises, we will warn you again before any more spoilers so you can skip past.

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

The next part is the Hilt construction. You will be presented with a tray of parts from your chosen theme along with a body. You have a number of choices here and this is what defines your Light Samber as Custom.

There is a choice of 4 main grip pieces, you pick 2 one upper and one lower, although they are interchangeable afterward. You make a choice from 2 switch plates, two end caps, and two emitters. At every stage we got a little phased by the choice, we never really knew which path we wanted to go down, but this was the hardest choice really as the impact of your choice would really affect the finished blade, but we felt there was very little time to think through the implications and it was really a gut feeling. Or maybe the force guiding us?

You are then guided through the pretty simple process of putting your saber together. There is guidance from the master gatherer, and individual assistants going around making sure you are ok.

Once everyone has completed the build, the assistant inserts your hilts into the activation tubes, where secretly the Blades are attached ready for the Light Saber Ceremony.

SPOILER WARNING! – If you want to avoid spoilers in the ceremony we would advise skipping ahead at this point.

After the assistants go around and secure all Sabers in the activation tubes (and sneakily check they are all working) A surprise visitor arrives in the chamber. Not in body but in spirit. The lights dim, and then the chamber suddenly glows an eerie green, signifying the presence of somebody special. The most Iconic voice in all of Star Wars now speaks to you from beyond the grave. We are not going to mention the character, if you can’t guess then you probably should not be spending 219 on a lightsaber!

After the rousing speech, the Master Gatherer invites you all to activate your light sabers simultaneously as the tube covers roll back and reveal the iconic glow of the blades. This is done at random with an epic score and as an entire room lifts up their blades it’s a little bit emotional.

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

We have read plenty of times about this moment and we have to be honest most people oversell it a little, almost claiming it as a religious experience. Reality is it’s a nice little moment, that gives you a warm feeling in your core, but we didn’t get teary or anything!

After a few seconds of waving around your new Saber, you get a final message from the special one and then file out of the room. Receiving your VERY handy carry case along the way. It’s all over in 15-20 mins, and the entire experience is around 30-40 mins from check-in.

Outside you get to play with your new saber and when done you can head over to the Droid Depot and have them store it for you while you explore the rest of the park. You can then head back at the end of the day and retrieve your Saber before leaving the park. Just remember to get your nighttime saber shots in the Outpost!

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

Are the Light Sabers Any Good?

Essentially you are paying 219.99 for a lightsaber. While the ceremony is fun, experiences like this are usually included with your Park Ticket so really the majority of the price has to be considered as purchasing the actual product. So at 219.99 they better be good! A cheap lightsaber is pretty awful and they usually break, but good replicas are really quite impressive.

We love the interchangeable nature of the blade, we look at this below, but swapping out the crystal, changes the color. The Blades are really good and are lightweight and look great when illuminated, but they are also really tough and do not break if you accidentally strike it while whirling it around. We wouldn’t advise having a Light Saber Duel, but there are pretty tough.

The Hilts are really sturdy build. The outer shells are all made from metal or a really sturdy resin and feel super strong and study. The designs are nice and we love the fact you can customize them a little.

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

On the negative side, we find the designs a little cartoonish. They feel quite oversized, a faithful replica would be considerably smaller. Most of the edges are also quite rounded. Even on edges that would be quite sharp, they have been machined in a way that they are smooth and rounded, hence feeling a little cartoony.

So overall while the quality is really good, it’s just the designs that leave a little to be improved on.

219.99 is really at the very high end of what you would expect to pay for a replica of this quality. They are definitely overpriced, but not by too much. Replicas of a comparable Quality would sell for 170-190 on Amazon or eBay, but these would usually be faithful replicas of a particular Lightsaber from the franchise.

You can get Sabers of MUCH better quality, but you would pay a lot more too. 350-500 for the better replicas.

In Dok-Ondars Den of Antiquities, you can purchase Premium legends Lightsabers, these are of similar quality and build but overall superior in design and you will get a real design from the films. These start at 159 up to 179, but this is for the Hilt Only, you need to pay 45 extra if you want a Blade!

Overall if you JUST want a Lightsaber, then you would be better off just buying one from a retailer, but if you want one from Galaxy’s edge, but are not fussed with the Ceremony, then buying one from Dok-Ondar is the way to go. However, for the full experience, Savi’s Workshop is really satisfying. While we don’t love the oversized cartoonishness of the Saber, we don’t hate it either. It’s a well-built sturdy piece of merchandise, and we imagine it will last years.

Finally, if your little ones have their hearts set on a lightsaber but the thought of spending 219.99 each on one that is not really suitable as a toy, feels a little frivolous, then Dok-Ondars does sell more budget-friendly toy light sabers (around 39), these will probably satisfy your kids and are probably more durable if they start hacking lumps out of each other!

And Finally, Disney does allow you to bring your own lightsabers into the park so there is no requirement to buy from Disney at all.

Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber Options

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

  • Power and ControlThe Power and control is the Sith choice. These are more angular with dark detailing and perfect for those looking to join the Dark Side
galaxy, edge, savi, workshop
  • Elemental NatureThe Elemental Nature Saber is best for those looking for a more unique-looking weapon. The ornate metal pieces are actuated by (synthetic) natural materials such as Bantha Skin, Raptar Teeth, Bylark wood, and Cartesian whalebone. These unique designs are seldom seen in the Star Wars Universe, infact the only reference we can find is Gungi, and Wookie Jedi, featured in the Clone Wars who used a Brylark tree, Saber.
galaxy, edge, savi, workshop
  • Protection and DefenseThe final category is Protection and Defense. These Sabers are accentuated with gold trims and regal insignias. These are the royalty of Lightsabers most similar to that wielded by Mace Windu and the high council of the Jedi Order. Those with delusions of grandeur will appreciate these. As will those who just like pretty things.
galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

While we have you here, we think it’s really important to have a good think about which style you are going to choose. We didn’t really and suddenly we were faced with the decision and honestly had no idea what to do. Do you want to go Classic, Evil, Unique or fancy.

It’s a really important decision and we are not sure if we chose wisely, as we were pushed quite quickly into making a choice. If you work out what you want before you go, you are more likely to make a better choice. Like scanning a menu before arriving at a restaurant. The other big choice you have is the Crystal!

Kyber Crystals

galaxy, edge, savi, workshop

Inside every Light, Saer is a Kyber Crystal. As you assemble your Light Saber you place your chosen crystal into the heart of the weapon, and this charges the light beam and powers the blade…it’s definitely not the AAA batteries. The crystals come in a variety of colors and these are what define the color of your lightsaber. You get one crystal included, from a choice of main 4 colors, Blue, Red, Green, and Violet.

While most people will have their favorites and obviously anyone building a Sith Saber will want a Red Crystal, any crystal will actually go into any hilt and create the corresponding color. Each crystal is also related to a character, but you will now know which (potluck) and this has no impact on the Saber. on this in the Holocron Section.

After you have built your Saber, you can buy additional crystals from Dok-Ondrs Den Of Antiquities. Priced at 17.99. You can then change the crystal in the heart of your saber and subsequently change its color.

The additional colors are White, Yellow, and Black. However, Black Crystals are not directly for sale and instead are found at random.

  • Blue – Jedi – Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker
  • Red – Sith – Darth Vader, Count Dooku, Darth Maul, Darth Sidious, Vader 8-Ball
  • Green – Jedi – Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, Yoda 8-Ball
  • Violet – Jedi – Mace Windu, Mace Windu 2
  • White – Jedi – Purchase Separately – Ashoka, Chirutt
  • Yellow – Jedi – Purchase Separately – Maz, Temple Guard
  • Black – Sith – Purchase Separately – Ultra Rare – Snoke

How to find a Black Kyber Crystal

To get the Ultra-Rare black Kyber Crystal, you need to buy a Red Crystal Capsule from Dok-Ondors Den Of Antiquities. However, even then 99 out of every 100 are just red Crystals. You need to get really lucky to bag the sort-after black crystal.

There are two kinds of Red Crystal Capsules and only the Silver Topped ones have the chance of bagging a Balck Crystel.

Flash-light – Early on, Dinsey rather naively assumed everyone would play fair on this, but people didn’t and many used a flashlight to scan through the Tubes and pick out the Black Crystals. Disney has put a stop to this and inserted an opaque Back card around the inside of each tube so there is no way of knowing the color inside. It is a total potluck.

You could always hunt one out on the black market, or consider getting into RF-Tag reprogramming.

Holocron

We mentioned before that every crystal has a different character attached to it. This has no bearing on the light sabers but does if you buy a Holocron. These are 50 and come in two flavors, the Jedi and the Sith.

The Holocron is a Digital Cube or pyramid that lights up and delivers quotes from the movies in various Character voices. The units come with a default voice, Obi-Wan for the Jedi, and Darth Bane for the Sith Pyramid. The Holocrons interact with inserted Kyber Crystals, glowing the corresponding color, and delivering quotes from whatever character the crystal is associated with.

Each color crystal can have several characters and there is no way of knowing which character you will get when you are buying separate crystals. We have provided a list above of the possible color and character options.

Each Holocron reacts differently to Jedi or Sith Crystals too, putting sith crystals in the Jedi Cube will just result in Yoda warning you of the Dark side. Putting Jedi Crystals in the Sith Cube results in Darth Sidious (Emperor Palpatine) trying to lure you to the Dark Side.

You can also connect the Holocrons and they interact with each other in a really interesting way.

It turns into an expensive hobby if you start to collect the Units. 100 for both Holocrons and then a minimum of 17 crystals to get the collection, but as you are buying character potluck you will have to buy some colors multiple times, and getting a black is very rare.

In the end, all you get is a light-up cube that says a few quotes…

Can I take my Lightsaber on a Plane? – How do I get it home?

The Light Sabers come with a handy carry case so getting them home is no issue unless you have to take the item on a plane. Here it is a little more complicated. We have heard so many mixed reports about whether or not they are allowed as carry-on items. And really, it’s down to the airline, and even the Crew that are operating it that day.

Our own experience was fine. We flew Virgin Atlantic and the Check-in Assistant did not know if it was ok or not but called over the head Ground Handler, who gave us the ok. At security, they were fine with it but did require us to go through the unusual items scanner. On the flight, it fitted easily in the overhead storage bins and got home with us with no problem.

We considered just putting it in our checked bags, but this was a no-no, simply due to size. The Saber Breaks down, but the blade is still too large for our bags. It’s a 36-inch blade and even horizontally it’s nowhere near, and unless it fitted easily so we could pad it out, it would probably not have survived anyway.

Other Airlines have more strict policies, especially the more budget-orientated ones. Some will allow them in the cabin, but only in the Cabin Crews storage area, others will check it at the gate for free, and others will require you to check it as a separate charged piece of luggage. Unfortunately, there is very little clarity on this and we have even seen discrepancies between the SAME airline!

You are going to have to check with your airline and even then hope the crew on that day abides by the Standard Operating Procedures. We have even seen Agents flat-out lie and claim it is illegal to take them on board which is pure nonsense.

Overall – Is Savi’s Workshop Experience Worth It?

What a question this really is. In all honesty, no. Not in the strictest of terms anyway. But some things are not really meant to be worth it in a real way. They are an obvious luxury, a frivolity, and something to just say you have done. We definitely put Savi’s Workshop in this category, It’s a paid experience that you just have to try at least once.

It’s also nice you get a lasting reminder of the experience. Unlike many, such as dining experiences, once they are over, that experience just fades into memory. Here you get your custom-made Lightsaber to take home and cherish. Ours is nicely mounted on the wall in the office and it’s something we really look fondly on.

For us the acid test is always, do we regret it? Not at all. Even though we have come to the conclusion that both the experience and the end product are both overpriced, we are still more than happy to have ponied up and taken our turn. Would we do it again, probably not? For us, it’s a once-and-done thing, but some might like the idea of collecting the set…and thinking about it, a Power and Control Saber would look pretty nice next to our Peace and Justice one.

For kids, it’s a tougher choice, especially if you have several all wanting to build. The Lightsabers should not be considered toys, more collectible items and if your kid is old enough to understand that, then they would probably enjoy the experience, if they just want a Lightsaber as a toy, it’s not really for them and they would be better suited buying a toy version.
