The AGPS module does not deliver a convincing accuracy. Even in an open field, the receiver needs several minutes to find a satellite. The App GPS confirms the low reception quality. In comparison to the precise Garmin Edge 500, the position indicated by the E3 deviates sometimes from the actual position.

Calling Functions and Speech Quality

The telephone app has a simple design and is typical for an Acer. When being called, a cool feature pops up: a widget named Float Caller is opened, which offers the most important options for call handling (e.g. pick up, reject, silent and maximize).

Both voice recording and play while calling are nicely done. Unlike other devices, the clear audio response can score. The volume is also at a reasonable level; it is neither too quiet nor too loud.

The integrated camera on the back has a 13-megapixel resolution. The front camera, however, has as usual a lower resolution, namely only 2 megapixel. It is worth noticing that both cameras have a separate LED flash. Apparently, Acer wanted to appeal to young people who frequently take selfies with their front camera. Filming can be done in Full HD resolution. The Acer camera app is not characterized by special features. The Acer Rapid Button can be used as a shutter release.

In comparison to the iPhone 5 and the Nokia 1020, one can notice a slight paleness of the shots. For a smartphone within this price range, the camera of the E3 Duo can compete with satisfactory shots.

Better known for its affordable laptops, tablets and other gadgetry, Acer seems keen to stake out some ground in the budget-to-mid-range smartphone market too.

It’s the first phone we’ve seen from the Taiwanese firm since the ultra-cheap Liquid Z4 and the slightly dearer Liquid E3 appeared in February, but there are more affordable Acer handsets on the way.

The sticker price for an unlocked Acer Liquid Jade stands at £229 (around 360, AU400), though you can probably better this online; as yet there are no details of what you can expect to pay on contract, or even if it will be available through the usual operator channels at all.

That puts it firmly in the mid-range, substantially cheaper than the big hitters (such as the Samsung Galaxy S5) but a step above the budget models (such as the Motorola Moto E).

It’s going up directly against the likes of the Sony Xperia M2 and the Motorola Moto G. and that means the phone has a tough fight on its hands.

The Acer Liquid Jade is something of an oddity in many ways: it looks unlikely to make it to the States and in Asia it comes as a pair with the Leap smartband.

The Liquid Jade offers some unusual features like dual SIM capabilities and a whopping 13-megapixel camera but cuts back in other areas — there’s no 4G support here, for example, which is a shame as the high-speed data network rolls out across the country.

The key question is: has Acer done enough to make the Liquid Jade stand out in a crowded mid-range field? Or is it another handset destined to sink without trace outside of Asia?

You’re not going to hear any sharp intakes of breath when you take out the Acer Liquid Jade in company, but then you’re not going to be embarrassed to have it on show either. It’s a neatly designed, light, 5-inch handset with a faux-metal trim around the edges, and it’s functional without being spectacular (something of a running theme for this phone).

I like 5-inch screens. for me they hit the sweet spot for a large-ish display that you can still just about use with one hand. but the 720 x 1280 IPS display gives the game away that this isn’t a premium handset.

With a 294ppi resolution it’s crisp and bright in use, but it’s one of the corners that have been cut to get to this price. Functional but not spectacular, again.

The handset measures 140.5mm x 69mm x 7.5mm (5.53in x 2.72in x 0.30in) and weighs in at a very light 110g (5.64 oz). that’s 20g lighter than the Nexus 5 I usually carry around with me. It’s difficult to fault the design, though it feels a little cheap and is very plasticky (which means fingerprints can be a problem on the back).

It feels comfortable and well built when held and the protruding camera lens around the back isn’t really a problem. The micro USB port sits on the base, with the headphone socket on top together with the power button; the dual-SIM card and microSD card slots are on the left with the volume controls in the usual position on the right.

That microSD card slot certainly helps: there’s only 8GB of on-board storage, presumably another corner-cutting tactic to keep the price down.

Black, grey, green and white options are shown on Acer’s website but it was the black one I had in to test for this review.

Key features

What’s most notable about the Acer Liquid Jade is that there’s very little of note about it. The dual-SIM capability seems a novelty more than anything else and most of the rest of the handset’s specs are par for the course. If you were wanting to pick out the phone’s highlights (or indeed lowlights) then you’d be struggling for material.

Perhaps the biggest eyebrow raiser is that 13MP camera. megapixels are by no means everything, of course, but that’s a step above most other handsets out there (even the iPhone 6 settles for an 8MP snapper). on the camera later in this review, but it’s worth pointing out here.

The price could be another distinguishing feature of the Acer Liquid Jade, but while you could label it as affordable, a £200 outlay is still significant. Although, the Acer promo codes currently available could help. Considering it’s up against the very good value Moto G, the Liquid Jade doesn’t quite look cheap enough (though to be fair it’s thinner and lighter than the Motorola handset).

There’s a glut of mid-range Android and Windows Phone models on the market and the Acer Liquid Jade hasn’t got the features to make it stand out from the pack.

The battery life can swing from pretty average to pretty impressive, as I’ll explain shortly, but this can vary from user to user and it’s not really enough to tip the balance significantly.

Смартфон поступит в продажу в двух цветовых вариантах, черном и белом. НА фотографиях в обзоре белая расцветка корпуса. Вероятно, также будет Liquid E красного цвета, но пока о поставках этой версии ничего не известно, так что если он и появится в продаже официально, то не сразу после старта продаж, а позднее. По дизайну, габаритам и расположению элементов Liquid E ничем не отличается от оригинала.

Аппарат интересной формы, немного напоминает Acer neoTouch, верхняя и нижняя грани выгнуты, ребра без острых углов, переходы между плоскостями плавные. Мне внешний вид коммуникатора нравится еще со времен оригинального «ликвида», он оригинален и чем-то цепляет, при этом Liquid E не похож на порой слишком строгие и деловые смартфоны от HTC, а также на «мыльницы» от Samsung. И это хорошо.

Лицевая сторона с выключенным экраном почти целиком черного цвета и только по краю начинается белая область. Почти вся поверхность корпуса выполнена из глянцевого пластика, несмотря на «глянцевость» следы и отпечатки на корпусе едва заметны.

Поверхность экрана в отличие от остального корпуса пачкается очень серьезно и следы на ней заметны, дисплей лучше протирать, иначе выглядит он непрезентабельно.

К качеству сборки аппарата никаких нареканий нет, все части корпуса хорошо подогнаны друг к другу, зазоры между элементами минимальные, крышка аккумулятора надежно крепится на своем месте, люфта между корпусом и крышкой нет.

В руке аппарат лежит удобно, хотя немного скользит из-за глянцевого покрытия корпуса, носить Liquid E можно в карманах брюк, джинсов или в сумке, во внутреннем кармане пиджака аппарат оказывается тяжелым.

Здесь небольшая ремарка про удобство ношения. Дело в том, что мой образец Liquid E при любой нагрузке очень сильно нагревался. На практике это значит, что когда я кладу аппарат в карман и запускаю на нем музыку, то он постоянно напоминает о своем существовании, т.к. греет разные прилегающие к карману части тела. Звучит смешно, но на самом дело не очень удобно носить в кармане сковородку. Не знаю связано ли это с тестовым образцом или это особенность всех «ешек», но мне кажется, что это проблема аппарата.

Элементы управления

На лицевой стороне смартфона, в верхней части, расположен разговорный динамик, забранный сеткой и утопленный внутрь корпуса. Справа от динамика находятся датчик света и сенсор приближения. Световых индикаторов в аппарате нет, их заменяет панель значков на верхнем торце устройства. Во время подзарядки или подключения к PC горит иконка заряда, если пришло новое сообщение или есть непрочитанные email, горит иконка почтового конверта, также есть значок, обозначающий пропущенный звонок. Всего три иконки. Идея отличная, не вынимая аппарат из кармана, а только немного вытянув, вы можете увидеть, не пришли ли новые сообщения или почта, не было ли пропущенных звонков.

Хотелось бы, конечно, видеть больше возможностей, связанных с этими значками. Например, индикацию проигрывания музыки, разделение иконок текстовых сообщений и email, постоянный значок с отображение уровня заряда аккумулятора. Есть и неприятный момент, связанный с данной панелью оповещений. Не знаю почему, но в Acer решили, что если у них есть панель с иконками на верхнем торце, то значки в системной строке вверху экрана не нужны и убрали их. В итоге чтобы узнать, есть ли у вас новые почтовые сообщения, нужно непременно повернуть аппарат торцом к себе, чтобы увидеть там иконку. В системной строке на экране оповещений значка о новых сообщениях почты нет, хотя текстовые сообщения там появляются, как и иконка пропущенных звонков.

На левом ребре смартфона, сверху, располагается клавиша выключения экрана и устройства. На правом находится кнопка регулировки громкости. Эта клавиша не самая удобная, она недостаточно длинная и не выступает над корпусом, находится вровень с ним, так что нажимать ее вслепую сложно. Ниже клавиши громкости кнопка включения камеры, прямо таки экзотика в современных смартфонах на Android.

На верхнем торце кроме блока со значками располагается 3.5 мм разъем для наушников. На нижнем – скрытый заглушкой универсальный разъем miniUSB для подключения зарядного устройства или кабеля (связь с PC).

Клавиши управления под экраном сенсорные, если точнее, это сенсорный блок с разметкой четырех кнопок: возврат к главному меню (при удерживании вызывается диспетчер приложений), кнопка поиска, «Назад» и клавиша вызова меню.

Как и в большинстве новых смартфонов, в Liquid E, увы и ах, нет клавиш ответа и отбоя звонка. Сенсорные же кнопки в целом удобные, у них хорошая яркая подсветка, а уровень чувствительности клавиш настраивается в меню.

В Acer Liquid E как и в оригинале не управляющей кнопки, однако компания не учится на своих ошибках и в новой модели, как и в предыдущей, на экранной клавиатуре нет направляющих. Таким образом, если вы, например, ошиблись в наборе текста, то чтобы переместить курсор на пару букв назад вам нужно будет делать это прицельными кликами пальца между буквами, удовольствие то еще.

Обратимся к задней стороне корпуса. Верхняя половинка здесь, крышка аккумулятора, чтобы снять ее, нужно потянуть элемент на себя, соответственно в верх от плоскости аппарата, поддев крышку ногтем или чем-то еще в месте перехода ее в верхний торец.

Крепление для SIM-карты и карты памяти располагаются ниже отсека для аккумулятора. Слот для карты памяти расположен неудобно, заменить карту, не вынимая аккумулятор, не получится. Слот для карты памяти в Acer Liquid E формата microSD (поддерживаются карты microSDHC).

Экран

В аппарате установлен сенсорный TFT-дисплей емкостного типа с диагональю 3.5. Физические размеры экрана – 77×46 мм, разрешение 480×800 точек (WVGA). Экран с хорошим запасом яркости, с максимальными углами обзора. Главная фишка дисплея в Acer Liquid E – зеркальная подложка, благодаря которой экран остается читаемым в яркий солнечный день на улице. Аппарат оснащен 5 Мп камерой с автофокусом. Глазок камеры расположен в верхней части задней стороны корпуса, он немного выступает над поверхностью корпуса.

Интеейс камеры максимально прост: в режиме видоискателя на экране отображаются кнопки масштабирования и полоса со значками типа съемки, остальные параметру выбираются в меню: разрешение, баланс белого, значение ISO. Помимо описанных настроек можно изменять уровень контрастности и яркости по 10-балльной шкале. Также можно выбрать значение ISO. В настройках камеры нельзя отключить звук срабатывания затвора, но если он вам мешает, всегда можно просто понизить общую громкость до нуля, звук затвор также пропадет.

Качество фото на мой взгляд откровенно низкое, на уровне HTC Desire или даже хуже.

Для видео доступны следующие разрешения:

В режиме записи видео можно изменить баланс белого, других настроек нет. При любом разрешении видеосъемки возможно использование масштабирования. Использовать функцию масштабирования во время съемки нельзя, для этого вам в любом случае вначале придется прекратить запись. Качество видео вы можете оценить по приведенным ниже примерам.

Автономная работа

В аппарате используется Li-Ion аккумулятор емкостью 1350 мАч. В стандартных условиях (30-40 минут разговор в день, Push mail, подключение по Wi-Fi примерно час в день, отправка и прием 10-20 текстовых сообщений) мой образец Acer Liquid E работал в среднем полтора дня или чуть дольше, если слушать на нем музыку, то время работы сокращалось до суток. В любом случае это хорошие показатели на фоне HTC Desire или Samsung Galaxy S, например, которые едва выдерживают рабочий день при аналогичной нагрузке.

Производительность

Аппарат построен на платформе Qualcomm QSD8250, известной также как Snapdragon. Как и в оригинале, в Liquid E процессор работает на пониженной частоте, 768 МГц, против 1 ГГц в других аппаратах на данной платформе. Впрочем, и этой частоты более чем достаточно для комфортной работы со смартфоном.

Про воспроизведение видео говорить особенно нечего, конвертированное в «понятный» для ОС Android формат видео разрешений вплоть до 700×400 точек воспроизводится на Liquid E без проблем. Объем оперативной памяти в аппарате составляет 512 МБ, вдвоем больше чем в оригинале, внутренней памяти для установки программ – 512 МБ.

Интеейсы

Смартфон работает в сетях GSM (850/900/1800/1900) и UMTS (850/1900/2100). Поддерживаются оба стандарта высокоскоростной передачи данных – EDGE и HSDPA. Включать и выключать беспроводные интеейсы можно через меню настроек или с помощью стандартного виджета, который выносится на рабочий стол.

Для синхронизации с PC и передачи данных используется комплектный кабель miniUSB. Интеейс USB 2.0. Встроенный модуль Bluetooth 2.0EDR. Поддерживаются следующие профили:

Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP). управление воспроизведением музыки с беспроводной гарнитуры.

Hands-Free Profile 1.5

Реализованы основные и некоторые мультимедиа профили, стандартными средствами по-прежнему нельзя, например, передать по Bluetooth карточку контакта. Работа смартфона со стереогарнитурой не вызвала нареканий, качество звучания при использовании подобной гарнитуры приемлемое, но потрясающим его не назвать.

Wi-Fi (802.11b/g). Работа Wi-Fi-модуля также не вызывала претензий, если не считать существенного нагрева корпуса когда этот интеейс активен. В аппарате можно настроить правила перехода Wi-Fi в спящий режим, использование только статического IP-адреса при подключении и добавлять сертификаты безопасности.

В Acer Liquid E установлен чип gpsOne на платформе Qualcomm. В продаже аппарат будет без специального навигационного ПО, но его можно будет установить самостоятельно. Стандартно на Liquid E, как и на любом другом «роботе» предустановленна программа Google Maps.

Звук

Качество звука в Acer Liquid E, на мой слух ничем не отличается от звучания HTC Desire, HTC Legend, он стал получше чем был в тестируемомо мной оригинальном Liquid, вот что я могу сказать уверенно.

Программное обеспечение

Смартфон работает под управлением ОС Android 2.1 (Eclair), пожалуй, это одно из ключевых отличий «ешки» от оригинального Liquid. C другой стороны, обладатели просто Acer Liquid также получат (или уже получили) обновление до Android 2.1 В качестве интеейса в Liquid E используется стандартная среда «робота» с небольшими косметическими добавками от Acer. В частности, есть специальные панели с галереей мультимедиа и закладками на крайних рабочих столах, пара фирменных виджетов и главное – нормальный SmartDial и своя адресная книга.

В номеронабирателе от Acer есть только одна досадная ошибка, нельзя скрыть клавиатуру. Учитывая что строки с номерами крупные и видно их всего три, после того как вы ввели нужные буквы так и хочется убрать клавиатуру чтобы пролистнуть список найденных контактов, а сделать этого нельзя.

Адресная книга удобная, с ползунком быстрой прокрутки, кнопкой поиска и миникартинками контактов.

В Acer Liquid E также есть пара дополнительных программ, в частности невероятно глючный прогрыватель nemoPlayer, несколько других утилит и одно полезное приложение. Twidroid.

У аппарата нет проблем с качеством связи и уровнем приема сигнала. На мой слух недостаточно громкость вызывного динамка, разговорный, напротив, громкий. Виброзвонок средний по силе в большинстве ситуаций он чувствуется.

В смартфон появится в ближайшие недели, на старте продаж. Много это или мало на фоне конкурентов. На мой взгляд, ценник адекватен, да, можно возразить, что за примерно такие же деньги вы найдете например HTC Desire с оболочкой Sense и 1 ГГц процессором, но здесь есть два момента. Во-первых, по такой цене тот же Desire или SE X10 нужно еще поискать, во-вторых, оба проигрывают смартфону от Acer по времени работы, в-третьих, Liquid E скорее подойдет тем, кто точно знает, что хочет и ему нравится дизайн именно этого аппарата. Лично мне Liquid E нравится как раз за счет интересного внешнего вида, не избитого, если можно так выразиться, дизайна. В целом же Acer Liquid E, это разумное продолжение оригинальной модели с минимальным набором изменений и адекватным ценником.
